Canada has a shameful history.
Packed with racism, exploitation, genocide and the list goes on. There is very little to be proud of in our history in that regard and that makes Canada very similar to many countries around the world.
But here’s what makes Canada different…
Canada, or at the very least a lot of Canada, is trying to make things better.
We are owning our mistakes and past injustices. Perhaps not to the degree that some would wish or even to the degree that is required, but the wheels of justice and equality are slowly moving forward.
Take a look at the rest of the world. Take a look at other countries whose own history is just as packed with atrocities and bloodshed. For many of those countries, not a lot of attention is being given to righting the wrongs of the past. In fact, some are actively moving backwards.
Canada isn’t moving backwards.
At least, the majority of us aren’t.
I’m not suggesting what we’ve done or are doing is necessarily enough by any means, but I think it’s worth noting.
When I travel abroad and people find out I’m Canadian, I’m received warmly.
I’m welcomed.
I’m envied.
I also see that in the world, which is flawed and awful, being in Canada and being Canadian offers a chance to make things better.
Even in the slimy cha-cha dance world of politics in Canada, there are many who are actively working to make things better for all in Canada.
Canada, at one time, may have been a celebration of conquests.
It isn’t anymore.
Canada isn’t about being proud of a shameful history.
Canada is about the opportunity to rectify and make things better.
And when I look around the world, that makes me feel very lucky.
Canada is a process.
That’s why I’m proud to be Canadian.

You have put this so well. I have done a lot of travel and there are few countries I have visited that I could say “ I would be able to live here”. I worry about the uninformed and angry right hand turn the country seems to be taking. I love this country and it’s direction. There is a kindness to Canadians that is quite wonderful. I hope this tradition continues
