I know he has made mistakes and is getting pretty tired but our PM and his government faced some huge challenges and in my opinion by and large did what was right for the people of this country. We had had previous governments leave this country with no facilities to fight a global pandemic because of shortsighted cost cutting. We had seniors dying at disgusting rates because nursing home inspections had gone undone for years and standards of care were non existent . I’m about to rant so I won’t but thought needs to go into planning that this does not happen again. As usual you are spot on.
Thank -you for this! I am an elementary teacher and, I can assure your readers, that there is fallout from the pandemic experience. As teachers, things look more “normal” than they did (no masks, PPE, desk shields, separated classes, closed libraries, quarantine room). But this year does not feel normal. The students are struggling emotionally and academically. Teachers are still burnt out and working long hours to meet the never-ending needs. Still no time or energy for the pre-pandemic level of extracurriculars and field trips. “Remember all the fun stuff we used to do?” We will get there, I am sure. But we have to walk before we can run, and we’re limping right now. It was a tough 3 years. We don’t have to dwell on that fact, but we shouldn’t forget either.
Bang on! I find it shocking how even people I work with that were at the front line of the response in those first months where no one knew anything kind of see it like a dream. I think it is one reaction to trauma which is to minimize it. I can tell you that the kids are not alright and this may take years to recover what they lost or rather missed during some formative years.
And that this will happen again, possibly on a regular basis, and maybe we want to have an experience-based plan for next time?
