I’m writing this as I sit enjoying a coffee on a patio across from Canada Place in Vancouver.
The place is packed.
Not the patio but the city…
A mammoth cruise ship is docked about 150m from me.
My server said there were about 13,000 people in town from cruise ships alone last Saturday.
And that’s not counting the people arriving on the Rocky Mountain Train.
It’s mayhem.
Sunshiny mayhem.
Most of the people I’ve seen are happy. Enjoying the moment.
Some are… blasé.
Unaware of the beauty and bounty that surrounds them.
Distracted by the never ending to-do list minutiae of life.
Make no mistake.
Being here now is expensive.
My breakfast was $45.
That’s not a boast, so let me restate that…
My breakfast was $45!!
But spending lots of money doesn’t guarantee happiness.
Looking around at the laboured frowns of some of the people here dressed well and disembarking from a cruise that likely cost them tens of thousands of dollars make that evidently clear.
So, what’s my point?
I started to wonder if the people with big smiles plastered on their faces were in fact from the future.
They were from the future where time travel or memory travel was possible and had been given an opportunity to return to events in their lives for a do-over.
Like they had realized they had simply forgot to choose to enjoy their time and now had the chance to return and choose happy.
And then I thought maybe each of us have been given a do-over for times in our lives and we don’t know it.
Maybe today is a do-over and we get to choose happy and make the memory good.
Also…
Maybe eggs have hallucinogenic properties here.
I don’t know.
But I do know that I’m going to soak up the beauty and bounty in front of me today and choose happy.

Spinach Florentine, Orange Juice, Carafe of Coffee... all tasty!
Just wondering what all a person would get for a $45 breakfast…
