It was once said to me that self-employed people have two gears: work and worry.
It’s largely true.
When you’re busy, you’re focused on being busy.
You even complain about being too busy.
When you’re not busy… you’re worried you’ll never be busy again.
I think that fear isn’t exclusive to entrepreneurs though.
Every one of us, even those with “guaranteed” pay cheques, likely worries that the good times will suddenly stop.
I mean, they will eventually (pesky death) but too often we’re wasting the good times and good fortune, the smiles, the laughs, the merriment, by looking for dark clouds.
There’s probably a psychological term for it, but I’m no psychologist and you all have Google.
As someone who runs their own business, I get “the fear” every now and then.
The fear that… well, it’s been a good run but it’s over.
It’s easy to feel that way these days.
The news is bleak.
Rights are being trampled.
Cruelty is king.
However, I’ve found a way to break free of this sad trap.
Pretend you own a convenience store.
No, seriously.
You own a convenience store in a great location and you’ve just had the busiest weekend ever.
Now theoretically, no customers may come in ever again.
None.
Zero.
It’s entirely possible.
Now think of any convenience store you do not own.
What do you think the chances are of no customer ever setting foot inside ever again?
Slim.
I’d even say nil.
It’s entirely possible.
But it’s not probable
When you let those dark clouds cover up the day, it’s too easy to think the worst but…
Things might get better.
In fact, they probably will.
