I'm Not Brave

A quick thank you to YOU

“You’re so brave.”

I’d get that a lot during the pandemic whenever I’d release a pro-science video.

I didn’t feel brave.
It felt like the right thing to do.

The implication was that because of my public stance on issues such as vaccines and not killing your elderly neighbour or family member… it would cost me business.

Well, they were right.
It did in a way.

I have a platform — an audience that includes you — and though not as big as some, it is substantial.
I write things that people read.
I film things that people watch.
I record things that people listen to.

As someone who creates things, that is wonderful.
However… surely that comes with a modicum of responsibility to occasionally create things that attempt to make the world a bit better, no?

For example, I’m not really interested in politics but I am interested in everyone being treated fairly… and if you look around currently, there are a bunch of people who aren’t being treated very fairly.
So, I try to highlight that.

That’s not being political.
That’s just being… aware?

It’s certainly not being brave.
It shouldn’t be anyway.

But I guess it is.

It makes some brands and organizations nervous.
It also outs some brands and organizations as being willing to ignore injustice provided their bottom line is preserved.

I’ll be honest with you…
I’ve been told to keep quiet, to not speak out, to just shut up.
If I did? I’d probably be richer for it.
But I can’t shut up. How could anyone? *gestures in every direction*

So, what am I saying here?

I’m saying this…
