My father had no filter and it was definitely not something to brag about. It usually made me want to crawl into the nearest hole & die of embarrassment. I wish we all had thought bubbles above our heads that only we could read before and edit before anyone else knew what we were thinking. You have the right to your opinion, you are under no obligation to share it. Hurtful opinions should be kept themselves
I usually think of those with no filter as being more than slightly unhinged but never before as full of loon or otter crap. I love it. I shall carry that mental image with me for use when my mouth is moving into gear without benefit of the thought going through my brain
My mother is 83. She suffers from bipolar which is managed well with meds. However, after many years on the same cocktail of meds, she needs to have them tweaked to get her mind back to a normal baseline. This is also the time the filter in her brain flies out the window. Not only does it fly out the window, but it also gets stomped and shredded to bits. Where one would normally, keep their mouths closed over such topics as person’s looks, weight, strange thoughts, bigoted beliefs and other judgments, these would come flying out mom’s mouth, shocking and hurting people. Your above analogy about filters also fits here too; just because you think it, doesn’t mean it should be said out loud without checking to see if it passes through these 3 gates: Is is true, is it necessary, is it helpful.
You’re a master of analogy! And good to know the lake has loons and otters in abundance. With healthy digestive tracts!

Living without a filter can mean living alone, without contact with friends or family. That's an otterly true statement.
